Joshua Levine: Monumental - May 12, 4-7pm

ShoeboxLA Presents
Joshua Levine: MONUMENTAL

Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 4-7pm
The Studio for Southern California History, Chinatown
818 N. Hill Street (Best Western Plaza), Los Angeles, CA 90012

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present Joshua Levine: MONUMENTAL.  For this exhibition Levine creates a series of 12 sculptures that continue his investigation of genetic animal hybrids. These sculptures are presented on bases modeled after an iconic U.S. National Monument.  Monuments are typically used to mark or commemorate moments of historical importance or to celebrate cultural figures. Meant for public viewing, they are the truest form of “art for the masses”. Levine's trophies also magnify the exciting, dangerous and unknown path of cloning, genetics and synthetic biology and our continued quest for perfection, control and domination.

Joshua Levine received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA in sculpture from the University of Miami. Levine's work has been shown nationally and internationally and written about in several publications including ARTnews, art ltd., and Artillery. Originally from the East Coast, he currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Also on view at the Studio for Southern California History will be the Studio’s “LA Pinball,” a pinball machine designed after downtown Los Angeles with history and geography built into its layout. It was re-designed by the Studio in 2006 from a vintage Flash Gordon machine and it is FREE to play. The Studio for Southern California History seeks to critically chronicle Southern California history from a social and cultural perspective. www.socalstudio.org

ShoeboxLA Presents
Timothy Nolan: Drift

Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 4-7pm

The Studio for Southern California History – Chinatown
818 N. Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

ShoeboxLA is pleased to present Timothy Nolan’s Drift. For nearly two decades Nolan has explored illusions of three-dimensional space through the use of pattern, line and shape in two dimensional wall work and floor installations. While Minimalism and Cubism have influenced Nolan’s work, he also draws inspiration from lesser-known movements such as Pattern and Decoration and Op Art, addressing shifting perception of two and three dimensions; plastic space vs. real dimensionality. For his ShoeboxLA project, he will further this investigation in a work that falls somewhere between object, installation and drawing.
